Soliant Schools is working with a school in the Modesto, CA area, that is looking for a Teacher of the Visually Impaired (TVI) to join their team for the school year. The ideal candidate is located in a commutable distance, has an active TVI certification in the state of California.

Under the direction of an assigned administrator, the TVI will organize and implement services for pupils with severe vision impairments including assessment of pupils' functional vision; evaluate and recommend appropriate assistive technology and modified reading materials for pupil's use; instruct pupils in skills necessary to utilize recommended assistive technology and skills unique to impaired vision; collaborate with teachers, parents, other support personnel and administrators to facilitate inclusion of pupils in the least restrictive learning environment.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's/Master's Degree in a related field
  • Valid California Education Specialist Instruction credential authorizing service as a teacher of the visually impaired.  May also be required to hold an Orientation and Mobility authorization depending upon the assignment.  
  • EL authorization.
  • Department of Justice clearance. 
  • Successful experience as a teacher of the visually handicapped in a public school setting.  
  • Evidence of advanced training in the area of Educational Assistive Technology from a recognized program is desirable.

Brief Job Description of Duties

  • Receive referrals of pupils and plan for completing of the assessment process within defined special education timelines.
  • Collaborate with classroom teachers as well as other support personnel when appropriate, select and administer formal and/or informal assessments of pupils.
  • Prepare written assessment reports.
  • Evaluate pupils' need for and, if needed, recommend appropriate assistive technology and specialized reading materials.
  • Locate and assemble information necessary for the purchase of recommended assistive technology and large type and Braille reading material.
  • Prepare written requests for the purchase of specialized equipment, materials and supplies recommended by the IEP team. 
  • Prepare Present Levels of Performance, Annual Goals and Short-Term Objectives for review at IEP Team Meetings.
  • Attend IEP Meetings as necessary.
  • Plan and implement instructional activities for students in specialized skills.
  • Collaborate with and give guidance to teachers, instructional assistants, other support personnel and parents.
  • Document student progress toward achievement of annual goals and report same to parents on the schedule followed by the school site.
  • Prepare Braille, large type and tactile materials as necessary.
  • Maintain accurate registers, records and files.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.
