Remote Teacher of the Visually Impaired (TVI) - New York
Qualifications
• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Special Education with a concentration in Blind & Visually Impaired from an accredited institution
• Active New York State Initial or Professional Certification: Blind and Visually Impaired (All Grades) issued by the New York State Education Department (NYSED)
• Proficiency in Braille literacy instruction, Nemeth Code, functional vision assessments, and assistive vision technology
• Minimum of 2+ years of experience (school-based and/or teletherapy preferred)
• Familiarity with NYSED IEP processes, Committee on Special Education (CSE) meetings, and the Expanded Core Curriculum (ECC)
• Strong instructional, communication, and organizational skills
• Comfortable using telepractice platforms, screen readers, digital magnifiers, and remote learning tools
Key Responsibilities Assessment & Instruction
• Conduct virtual Functional Vision Assessments (FVAs), Learning Media Assessments (LMAs), and assistive technology evaluations
• Deliver direct, specialized virtual instruction and consultative support tailored to students who are blind or visually impaired
• Teach and reinforce the Expanded Core Curriculum (ECC), including Unified English Braille (UEB), visual efficiency skills, and compensatory access techniques
• Monitor student progress and adapt curriculum materials to ensure full access to general education instruction
Collaboration & CSE Support
• Collaborate closely with general and special education teachers, CSE members, related service providers, parents, and Orientation and Mobility (O&M) specialists
• Provide actionable recommendations for classroom accommodations, modified media, digital accessibility, and tactile resources
• Participate actively in virtual CSE / IEP meetings, multidisciplinary evaluation reviews, and annual reviews
Documentation & Compliance
• Maintain accurate, thorough, and timely documentation of direct service logs, progress notes, and IEP goal updates
• Ensure all evaluations and instructional services strictly comply with NYSED Part 200 regulations, district policies, and IDEA mandates
• Complete comprehensive evaluation summaries and state-required compliance paperwork
Technology & Digital Accessibility
• Utilize virtual learning platforms, digital magnification software, screen-reading tools, and accessible online curricula
• Convert instructional and assessment materials into accessible formats (digital Braille files, large print, tactile graphics, audio)
• Guide onsite school facilitators and families with setting up and troubleshooting assistive vision technology
Advocacy & Empowerment
• Empower students to develop self-advocacy skills, understand their visual diagnoses, and independently navigate assistive tools
• Provide specialized training and resources to school staff regarding visual impairment accommodations and inclusive classroom practices

• 1099 Independent Contractor Status
• Compensation for both Direct & Indirect Service Hours
• Estimated Pay Range: $45 – $60+ / hr (commensurate with experience, district budget, and candidate fit)
• Flexibility with schedule and working 100% from home
