Virtual Visual Impairment Educator - Arizona
Qualifications • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Special Education with a focus/specialization in Visual Impairments • Active Arizona Standard Professional Special Education - Visually Impaired (Birth–Grade 12) certificate issued by the Arizona Department of Education (ADE) • Active Arizona Department of Public Safety (DPS) Level 1 Fingerprint Clearance Card • Proficiency in Braille transcription/instruction, assistive technology for the visually impaired, and functional vision assessments • Minimum of 2+ years of experience (school-based and/or teletherapy preferred) • Experience with IEP development, Expanded Core Curriculum (ECC), and virtual specialized instruction is a plus • Strong communication, organization, and time-management skills • Comfortable using teletherapy platforms, digital accessibility tools, and remote learning software
Key Responsibilities Assessment & Instruction • Conduct virtual Functional Vision Assessments (FVAs), Learning Media Assessments (LMAs), and assistive technology evaluations • Provide direct specialized virtual instruction and consultative support tailored to students who are blind or visually impaired • Teach and reinforce the Expanded Core Curriculum (ECC), including Braille literacy, visual efficiency, and compensatory access skills • Monitor academic progress and adapt instructional materials to ensure equitable access to general education curricula
Collaboration & Support • Partner closely with general education teachers, special education teams, parents, and Orientation & Mobility (O&M) specialists • Recommend classroom accommodations, modified media, digital accessibility features, and tactile resources • Participate actively in virtual IEP meetings, multidisciplinary evaluation teams (MET), and 504 reviews
Documentation & Compliance • Maintain accurate and timely documentation of direct service logs, progress reports, and IEP goal updates • Ensure all evaluations and instructional services strictly adhere to Arizona Department of Education (ADE) guidelines, district policies, and IDEA mandates • Complete comprehensive evaluation summaries and state-required compliance documentation
Technology & Digital Accessibility • Utilize virtual learning platforms, screen readers, digital magnification tools, and accessible software for remote instruction • Convert instructional and assessment materials into accessible formats (braille files, large print, tactile graphics, digital audio) • Guide families, facilitators, and school personnel in operating and troubleshooting specialized assistive devices
Advocacy & Empowerment • Guide students in cultivating self-advocacy skills, environmental awareness, and independence using assistive technologies • Provide specialized training and resources to school staff regarding visual impairment accommodations and inclusive classroom practices
