TVI - Jamaica, NY
Make a real impact in the lives of students by providing key support and expertise as a Teacher for the Visually Impaired. This dynamic contract position offers the opportunity to work with a dedicated school community focused on serving deaf and hard-of-hearing students, ages 3–21. Most students communicate through American Sign Language, creating a richly collaborative environment for professionals passionate about accessible education.
You’ll have the flexibility to work 2 days per week, for approximately 4–6 hours each day (based on schedule, student attendance, and daily needs), managing a caseload of about 10 students with vision needs. Your expertise will ensure every student receives the support they need to thrive both academically and socially.
Desired Experience & Qualifications:
- Valid certification as a Teacher for the Visually Impaired (TVI)
- Experience working with students who are visually impaired, including those with additional sensory needs
- Familiarity or proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL) preferred
- Strong understanding of IEP processes and collaborative case management
- Excellent communication skills for engaging with students, families, and multidisciplinary teams
- Compassion, adaptability, and a commitment to supporting diverse learners
Role Responsibilities:
- Deliver direct vision services for a varied caseload
- Provide expert consultation and ongoing case management
- Observe students when vision concerns are identified, and coordinate necessary assessments
- Attend IEP meetings and contribute insights for student success
- Maintain regular communication with parents and ophthalmologists
