Job Description
A school district in Lee’s Summit, Missouri is seeking a qualified Teacher of the Visually Impaired (TVI) / Orientation & Mobility (O&M) Specialist for a full‑time, school‑based contract. This position serves K–12 students and focuses on providing specialized instruction and mobility training to support independence, accessibility, and academic success. Candidates experienced in both vision services and orientation & mobility are encouraged to apply.
Responsibilities
- Provide direct instructional services to students with visual impairments
- Deliver orientation and mobility (O&M) training, including safe navigation, travel skills, and environmental awareness
- Develop, implement, and manage Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) aligned with student needs
- Conduct functional vision assessments and learning media assessments
- Adapt curriculum, materials, and classroom environments for accessibility
- Instruct students in compensatory skills, including Braille, assistive technology, and daily living skills
- Collaborate with teachers, administrators, related service providers, and families
- Maintain accurate documentation and ensure compliance with state and federal guidelines
- Support student independence and access across school and community environments
Qualifications
- Active Missouri TVI certification and/or Orientation & Mobility (O&M) certification (COMS preferred) or eligibility to obtain
- Ability to pass background checks, fingerprinting, and district clearances
- Licensing and credentialing support may be available for eligible candidates
Education
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Visual Impairment Education, Orientation & Mobility, or a related field
Experience
- Previous school‑based experience working with students with visual impairments preferred
- Experience providing O&M services strongly preferred
- New graduates with appropriate certification are encouraged to apply
Skills
- Strong knowledge of Braille, assistive technology, and mobility training techniques
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills
- Ability to adapt instructional materials effectively
- Strong organizational and documentation abilities
- Commitment to supporting diverse student populations
Work Hours
- Monday–Friday
- 8:00 AM – 3:30 PM
- Approximately 37–40 hours per week
