Make a meaningful difference supporting students with visual impairments in the New Orleans area. This contract opportunity calls for a dedicated professional who will serve as an itinerant teacher for the visually impaired, traveling to schools across the area to ensure every student gets the tailored resources and support they deserve.
Your expertise will empower students, collaborating closely with school staff, classroom teachers, and state educational agencies. Each day brings the chance to create accessible learning environments: securing specialized materials, providing direct instruction—including Braille—and equipping both students and colleagues with essential assistive technology knowledge.
Key Qualifications & Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree and active Louisiana DOE certification—visually impaired certification required
- 3+ years in elementary, secondary, or special education settings
- Demonstrated skill supporting students with visual impairments
- Strong command of assistive technology, especially for training and empowering others
- Ability to provide Braille instruction; orientation and mobility training experience is a plus
- Professionalism, adaptability, and the ability to manage competing priorities
- Excellent communication skills and a passion for inspiring others
- Own reliable transportation and willingness to travel between multiple school sites
- Must complete a district drug screen and fingerprinting, as well as agency credentialing
Role Responsibilities:
- Provide direct services to students with visual impairments across multiple schools
- Interpret student needs and facilitate access to curricular materials
- Procure specialized textbooks and resources
- Deliver in-service training for faculty and staff
- Maintain regular contact with classroom teachers and the Louisiana Department of Education
- Perform additional duties as assigned by the Director of IDEA
