Teacher of the Visually Impaired in Kenner, LA
Step into an impactful contract role for the upcoming school year as an educator specializing in services for students with visual impairments. This is a full-time, itinerant position requiring travel between school sites primarily in the New Orleans area. You’ll play a crucial role supporting, teaching, and advocating for visually impaired students from elementary through secondary levels, while also empowering school staff with essential strategies and resources.
Responsibilities include:
- Delivering direct instructional services to visually impaired students across multiple campuses.
- Collaborating closely with general education teachers to prepare accessible materials and support classroom integration.
- Coordinating with the Louisiana Department of Education and reporting to special education leadership.
- Procuring and implementing specialized textbooks, tools, and assistive technology suitable for student needs.
- Conducting in-service training for school personnel, ensuring appropriate accommodations and support.
- Providing Braille instruction and, if possible, offering orientation and mobility training.
- Staying current with and enforcing all district and statewide education policies and protocols.
Desired skills and qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree and active Louisiana DOE Visually Impaired Certification are required.
- Minimum of three years’ experience in elementary, secondary, or special education settings.
- Demonstrated knowledge of assistive technology and adaptive resources for the visually impaired.
- Proficiency in Braille instruction; orientation and mobility training experience is a strong plus.
