Teacher for the Visually Impaired | New Orleans, Louisiana

Step into a vital role supporting students with visual impairments across the New Orleans area as a contract instructional expert. This opportunity runs from August 2026 through May 2027, offering a full-time, 35-hour weekly schedule with an engaging itinerant caseload spanning multiple school sites. As a subject matter specialist, you'll facilitate essential services, advocate for individualized student needs, and collaborate closely with classroom educators to promote inclusive learning environments.
Key Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree and active Louisiana Department of Education certification in visual impairment required
- Minimum of three years’ experience in elementary, secondary, or special education
- Proven expertise with assistive technologies and Braille instruction for visually impaired learners
- Exceptional communication skills and a history of inspiring educational change
- Strong organizational, analytical, and problem-solving abilities
- Experience with orientation and mobility training preferred
- Must pass required drug screen, fingerprinting, and internal prescreening processes
Primary Responsibilities:
- Travel daily between school sites to provide direct services and support for visually impaired students
- Interpret and address unique needs, securing special textbooks and materials as necessary
- Collaborate with classroom teachers to prepare reading materials in accessible formats
- Offer in-service training for educators and staff to optimize support for visually impaired students
- Maintain ongoing communication with classroom teachers and the Louisiana Department of Education
- Perform additional duties as assigned by the Director of IDEA
This assignment requires the ability to manage multiple priorities while remaining attentive to individual student needs. Candidates must be able to transport themselves to various schools and meeting locations throughout the day.
