Step into a vital educational support role for the 2026-2027 school year, working directly with elementary students who are visually impaired. As a Braillist, your expertise will ensure these young learners have full access to their curriculum—helping to create, transcribe, and adapt materials including braille, tactile graphics, and other accessible formats. This contract position is designed for professionals who hold a deep commitment to promoting inclusivity and academic success for all students.
Qualifications and Experience We Seek:
- Verified competency with Unified English Braille code through completion of one of the following: WSSB Braille Competency Test, NBPCB Unified English Braille exam, or Library of Congress certificate in literary braille transcribing (WAC 181-82-130).
- Prior school-based experience preferred, especially supporting elementary-aged children.
- Ability to pass WSP and FBI background checks, including sexual misconduct clearance.
- Valid Washington State Driver’s License or confirmation of reliable mobility.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail in producing accessible educational content.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Transcribe textbooks, classroom assignments, tests, and supplementary materials into braille and other appropriate tactile formats.
- Collaborate closely with classroom teachers, special education staff, and the Teacher of the Visually Impaired to assess and fulfill student needs.
- Modify classroom visuals and instructional materials to ensure equitable access to learning.
- Maintain accurate records of materials produced and distributed.
- Work exclusively on student in-person days, adhering to a Monday through Friday, 8:30am to 4:00pm schedule (37.5 hours per week).
