Make a significant impact supporting students with visual impairments as a dedicated educator in the New Orleans area! This rewarding contract opportunity runs from August 3, 2026, through May 27, 2027, providing direct and meaningful service to students across multiple school sites. As an itinerant teacher, you will empower learners and collaborate closely with instructional teams to ensure accessible and inclusive education.
Key Responsibilities:
- Travel to various school locations daily, facilitating services for students with visual impairments.
- Deliver direct support and instruction to students, including Braille literacy and assistive technology integration.
- Collaborate with general education teachers to adapt and prepare materials in accessible formats.
- Obtain and distribute specialized textbooks and resources.
- Lead in-service training for school personnel, promoting awareness and effective strategies to support visually impaired students.
- Maintain proactive communication with the Louisiana Department of Education and school leadership.
- Participate in meetings and contribute to a positive, inclusive school culture.
- Perform additional duties as assigned by the Director of IDEA.
Desired Skills & Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree and visually impaired certification required.
- Valid Louisiana DOE Certificate.
- Minimum of 3 years’ experience in elementary, secondary, or special education.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with a proven ability to motivate and inspire.
- Strong analytical abilities to assess student needs and recommend adaptive solutions.
- In-depth knowledge of assistive technology for visually impaired learners, with the ability to train staff and students.
- Proficiency in Braille instruction; familiarity with orientation and mobility training is a plus.
- Reliable transportation and can meet daily travel requirements.
- Completion of district-required drug screening and fingerprinting.
