Teacher of the Visually Impaired in Harvey, LA
Make a lasting impact by supporting students with visual impairments through expert instruction and advocacy. In this contract position, you will work across multiple school sites, providing vital services and educational resources directly to visually impaired students. The role will have you collaborating closely with teachers and administrators to ensure the appropriate supports are in place for each learner’s success.
What you’ll need to succeed:
- Bachelor’s degree and active Louisiana DOE certification, with a focus in visual impairment.
- At least 3 years of relevant teaching experience (elementary, secondary, or special education).
- Expertise in assistive technology tailored for visually impaired learners.
- Proficiency in Braille instruction.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills, able to inspire and motivate in diverse team settings.
- Analytical and problem-solving abilities, including the use of qualitative/quantitative data for decision-making.
- High degree of professionalism, with effective time and priority management.
- Capacity for regular local travel between school sites; personal transportation required.
- Ability to pass all background checks, drug screening, and credentialing procedures.
- Orientation and mobility training experience is a plus.
Primary responsibilities:
- Facilitate and interpret educational services for visually impaired students, adapting materials and instruction.
- Provide consultative support and in-service training to school personnel to ensure appropriate accommodations.
- Maintain ongoing communication with teachers, district administration, and the Louisiana Department of Education.
- Prepare and provide specialized instructional materials, including Braille.
- Uphold student progress documentation and complete other assignments as directed by administration.
This position runs from August 3, 2026, to May 27, 2027, with a 35-hour workweek and daily travel required across district sites.
