Step into a rewarding role supporting students with visual impairments as a dedicated specialist, working on a contract basis for the upcoming school year. In this engaging, itinerant position, you'll be traveling between multiple sites in the New Orleans area, helping students from elementary through high school access essential educational resources and reach their fullest potential.
Your primary responsibilities will include providing direct services to visually impaired students, collaborating closely with classroom teachers to adapt materials, and serving as a resource for staff through in-service training. You’ll have the chance to secure specialized equipment and ensure proper supports are delivered, while also maintaining strong relationships with both the Louisiana Department of Education and educational teams across various campuses.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree and valid certification in visual impairment required.
- Active Louisiana Department of Education certification.
- At least three years of experience in elementary, secondary, and/or special education settings.
- Demonstrated expertise in assistive technology and the ability to instruct in Braille.
- Strong communication, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to inspire, motivate, and create a culture of high expectations.
- Familiarity with orientation and mobility training is preferred.
Responsibilities:
- Travel between district campuses to provide services.
- Interpret and advocate for the needs of visually impaired students.
- Train teachers and staff on appropriate supports.
- Prepare and adapt materials, including Braille, as needed.
- Maintain effective communication with teachers, administration, and state agencies.
- Complete timely documentation and participate in broader special education initiatives.
Physical Requirements:
- Operate office equipment; occasionally lift up to 10 pounds.
- Provide your own transportation to schools and meeting sites.
