Make a meaningful impact supporting students as a Teacher for the Visually Impaired in a contract role for the 2026-2027 school year. This position offers the opportunity to work itinerantly throughout a vibrant school community in the New Orleans area, providing critical services to visually impaired students across multiple school sites. You'll collaborate closely with classroom teachers and district staff to ensure that every child receives the resources and support they need to thrive.
Key Responsibilities:
- Travel daily to multiple school locations to deliver direct services to visually impaired students.
- Assess student needs, provide specialized instruction, and facilitate use of assistive technologies and Braille.
- Obtain and prepare instructional materials suited to each student’s needs, coordinating closely with classroom staff.
- Offer in-service training for educators and staff, ensuring understanding and implementation of supports.
- Maintain detailed communication and documentation, including outreach to the Louisiana Department of Education.
- Perform duties assigned by the Director of IDEA and assist with additional responsibilities as needed.
Desired Skills & Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree and certification in teaching visually impaired students (required).
- Valid Louisiana Department of Education certification.
- At least 3 years’ experience in elementary, secondary, and/or special education settings.
- Expertise in assistive technology and Braille instruction.
- Professionalism, analytical thinking, and strong organizational strengths.
- Ability to inspire and support both students and colleagues.
- Orientation and mobility training experience preferred.
- Must pass district-mandated drug screening and fingerprinting.
- Physical ability to travel, carry materials, and perform standard classroom duties.
