Support the academic journey of elementary students with visual impairments as a Braillist, playing a critical role in making education accessible and inclusive. Based near Lakewood, WA, this school-based, contract position for the 26/27 school year offers the opportunity to help students thrive through expertly-transcribed educational materials and tactile resources.

In this position, you'll collaborate closely with teachers and educational staff to ensure students receive braille and other accessible format versions of their lessons, assignments, and assessments. This role calls for a dedicated professional eager to make a positive impact within an elementary caseload environment.

Qualifications and Desired Background:

  • Demonstrated expertise in Unified English Braille code; completion of one of the following is required: WSSB Braille Competency Test, NBPCB Unified English Braille exam, or a Library of Congress certificate in literary braille transcribing (WAC 181-82-130).
  • Previous school-based or educational experience is strongly preferred.
  • Successful completion of WSP and FBI background checks, as well as sexual misconduct clearance.
  • Valid Washington State Driver's License or documented ability to travel locally.
  • Strong proficiency in producing tactile graphics and accessible educational materials.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Transcribe instructional content, tests, and classroom materials into braille and alternative formats for students with visual impairments.
  • Produce tactile graphics that support various subjects and classroom activities.
  • Collaborate with educators, teachers of the visually impaired, and support teams to ensure timely delivery of accessible resources.
  • Serve on-site during student attendance days, maintaining a schedule of 37.5 hours per week (Monday through Friday, 8:30am–4:00pm).
  • Maintain strict confidentiality and meet all compliance standards for student information and safety.
