Teacher of Visually Impaired - Metairie, LA
Make a meaningful difference in the lives of students as a dedicated Teacher for the Visually Impaired on a contract basis for the upcoming academic year. This role is itinerant, requiring travel to multiple schools in the New Orleans area, providing vital support and specialized instruction to visually impaired learners across age groups. You’ll be a resource and advocate for both students and staff, helping ensure access and equal opportunity through your expertise.
Key Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree and current Louisiana DOE certification, with additional certification in visual impairment required
- Minimum three years of experience in elementary, secondary, and/or special education
- Proficiency in Braille instruction and in-depth knowledge of assistive technology for visually impaired students
- Outstanding communication skills to collaborate with school personnel, families, and community agencies
- Demonstrated ability to analyze data to inform instruction and support student achievement
- High level of professionalism, adaptability, and organizational skills
- Familiarity with orientation and mobility training preferred
- Must be able to provide your own transportation and meet district-mandated drug screening and fingerprint requirements
Role's Primary Responsibilities:
- Deliver direct services to visually impaired students across assigned campuses
- Facilitate in-service training for staff to implement appropriate supports and instructional strategies
- Source and adapt specialized textbooks and materials for student use
- Work closely with classroom teachers to prepare reading materials in appropriate formats
- Maintain regular communication with the Department of Education and participate in meetings as required
- Perform additional duties as needed to support student success
This contract position offers 35 hours per week, with a schedule of 7 work hours per day, plus a 30-minute unpaid lunch.
