Teacher for the Visually Impaired (TVI) | Metairie, Louisiana
Step into a meaningful role supporting students as a Teacher for the Visually Impaired in the vibrant New Orleans area. In this contract position, you'll have the unique opportunity to travel between sites, serving diverse students and collaborating closely with school staff to ensure that all visually impaired learners receive exceptional support. You’ll be at the forefront of advocacy and education, facilitating access to materials and individualized learning experiences while building vital skills for independence and success.
Key Responsibilities:
- Travel daily between assigned school sites to deliver direct and consultative support for visually impaired students.
- Interpret and facilitate services tailored to each student’s needs, collaborating with classroom teachers to provide appropriate materials in accessible formats.
- Deliver in-service training for teachers and staff to promote best practices for visually impaired learners.
- Source and prepare specialized textbooks and adaptive resources.
- Serve as a liaison, maintaining communication with the Louisiana Department of Education and school leadership.
- Provide instruction in Braille and support the use of assistive technology.
- Uphold high standards in documentation and compliance, performing additional duties as assigned.
Qualifications & Desired Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree and current visually impaired certification required.
- Active Louisiana DOE Certification.
- Minimum of 3 years’ experience in elementary, secondary, or special education.
- Strong communication skills and the ability to motivate and inspire others.
- Experience with assistive technology and Braille instruction.
- Analytical, problem-solving mindset with the capacity to manage multiple priorities.
- Ability to work independently, travel to various sites, and provide your own transportation.
- Drug screening and fingerprinting required.
