Teacher of the Visually Impaired in New Orleans, LA

Key Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree plus certification in teaching the visually impaired (Louisiana DOE Certification required)
- At least 3 years’ experience in elementary, secondary, or special education
- Demonstrated ability to foster achievement and lead in challenging environments
- Strong communication skills, able to engage and motivate students and staff
- Analytical mindset and adept problem-solving abilities, using data to inform action
- Expertise in assistive technology for the visually impaired and Braille instruction
- Familiarity with orientation and mobility training is a plus
- Must pass district drug screening and fingerprinting
- Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation for itinerant travel
Role Responsibilities:
- Travel between assigned schools to facilitate and interpret the needs of visually impaired students
- Provide in-service training to school personnel for inclusive education practices
- Acquire special textbooks and learning materials tailored for visually impaired students
- Collaborate closely with general education teachers to adapt and prepare materials in accessible formats
- Deliver direct instruction and support in Braille and assistive technologies
- Maintain active communication with both the Louisiana Department of Education and district special education leaders
- Perform additional duties as required by the Director of IDEA
- Manage physical demands such as sitting, operating office equipment, and periodic lifting/mobility
