Qualifications and Experience:
- Valid state certification as a Teacher of the Visually Impaired or eligibility for endorsement
- Demonstrated experience working with children or adolescents with visual impairments
- Ability to conduct functional vision and learning media assessments
- Strong knowledge of Braille, assistive technology, and adaptive instructional methods
- Excellent communication skills to facilitate collaboration with families, students, and fellow staff
- Organized, self-motivated, and adaptable to changing needs within the school
Primary Responsibilities:
- Develop and implement Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) tailored to each student’s specific vision-related needs
- Provide direct specialized instruction—individually or in small groups
- Teach Braille literacy, use of low vision aids, and techniques to access core curriculum materials
- Consult regularly with general education teachers, paraprofessionals, and families to ensure accommodations are effective
- Keep accurate records documenting student progress and required reporting
- Support transition planning and advocacy as students move through grade levels
