Key Skills and Qualifications:
- Active Louisiana Department of Education Certification required
- Bachelor’s degree plus certification to teach the visually impaired
- Minimum of 3 years’ experience in elementary, secondary, or special education
- Solid understanding of assistive technology for the visually impaired; able to train both students and teachers
- Competency in providing Braille instruction
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills across various settings
- Demonstrated professionalism, excellent organizational skills, and sound judgment under pressure
- Ability to build collaborative relationships with staff, students, and families
- Orientation and mobility training familiarity is a plus
- Reliable transportation required; ability to travel to schools within the district daily
- Successful completion of background check, drug screen, and fingerprinting as part of credentialing process
Responsibilities:
- Travel between multiple school sites daily to provide direct teaching services to visually impaired students (ages and locations vary)
- Collaborate with classroom teachers and special education staff to ensure students’ learning materials are prepared appropriately
- Acquire and organize specialized textbooks and resources for student use
- Offer in-service training to school personnel to enhance support for visually impaired learners
- Maintain regular communication with state education authorities and district leadership
- Uphold comprehensive documentation and perform additional duties as assigned
