Teacher for the Visually Impaired (TVI) | Metairie, Louisiana

Empower visually impaired students and collaborate across educational settings as a specialist contracted to serve schools in the greater New Orleans area. You’ll work itinerantly, traveling to multiple campuses each week and supporting students from elementary through secondary grade levels. As a vital resource, you will facilitate meaningful services, provide professional training, and champion inclusive educational opportunities throughout the school year (August to late May).
Key Qualifications & Skills:
- Bachelor’s degree and current Louisiana DOE certification for visually impaired teaching required
- Minimum of 3 years’ experience in elementary, secondary, or special education settings
- Strong command of assistive technology designed for visually impaired learners
- Proven ability to teach Braille; familiarity with orientation and mobility techniques preferred
- Exceptional communication skills to train, collaborate, and inspire both students and staff
- Analytical mindset with an ability to use data to inform practices and solutions
- Consistently demonstrates professionalism, sound judgment, and the ability to prioritize
- Must successfully complete district-required drug screening and fingerprinting
Primary Responsibilities:
- Travel daily between assigned schools, offering direct services to visually impaired students
- Interpret individual needs and ensure proper supports and materials are provided
- Obtain, adapt, and prepare textbooks and instructional content in accessible formats
- Partner with classroom teachers and the Department of Education to optimize student experiences
- Deliver in-service training to school staff to foster understanding and effective practice
- Maintain open, reciprocal communication with all education partners and families
- Carry out additional duties as delegated by the Director of IDEA
