Make a meaningful impact on the educational journey of students with visual impairments by supporting their growth and access to resources throughout the New Orleans area. This contract opportunity spans the full academic year, starting in August and ending in May, with a 35-hour workweek and daily travel to multiple locations as an itinerant educator. Your specialized knowledge will guide both students and staff, enabling you to create positive, accessible learning environments.
Experience and Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree and active Louisiana DOE certification, with a specialized credential in visual impairment required
- Minimum of 3 years’ teaching experience in elementary, secondary, or special education settings
- Demonstrated expertise with assistive technology and Braille instruction; experience delivering orientation and mobility training is a plus
- Strong analytical, communication, and problem-solving skills
- Ability to inspire and lead, and to collaborate with multidisciplinary teams
- Dedicated to professional standards, capable of balancing competing priorities with sound decision-making
- Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation for daily travel
- Completion of pre-employment drug screen and fingerprinting required
Role Responsibilities:
- Facilitate individualized and group instructional support for visually impaired students across assigned schools
- Collaborate with teachers and staff to adapt materials into accessible formats
- Provide specialized training for staff and ensure compliance with students’ educational needs
- Acquire and maintain equipment and resources tailored for visually impaired learners
- Serve as an ongoing liaison with the Louisiana Department of Education
- Keep accurate documentation and contribute to IDEA-related responsibilities as directed
- Maintain regular, proactive communication with classroom teachers and district leadership
